Season Two Episode Three: Better Late Than Never

I'm not going to lie, these are getting harder and harder to do and I'm only three episodes in! Maybe November was just crazy - for fuck's sake a racist humanoid tangerine was elected "Leader of the Free World" - but on top of that bullshit, life was just hectic. 2016 has been a harsh mistress all around.

Looking back on the last two episodes of the season thus far, I felt there was a little too much electronic music. It's clearly a love of mine but switching from a live internet radio show to a podcast was supposed to free me up to dig deeper into my musical interests. I think I've cracked the service this episode, you can expect to see a quite a bit more variety in upcoming shows.

Also, I'm happy to have one of my good friends and favourite DJ's Nick Hood supply the guest mix this month! He did a stellar job, if you have ever seen him play live you know he always knocks it out of the park. It's been a while since he has released a mix so I'm honoured to have him break his fast on my show. In fact I wouldn't be upset if you skipped right past my mix and embraced his blend of trapped out chopped and screwed trill phonk head on!

FAWNA: Musical Flora

I stumbled across FAWNA about a year ago whilst on the hunt for Portishead remixes for what eventually became my 2016 Future Forest set, she has a live cover of Glory Box that i must have listed to fifty times. I don't know if its some creepy social media algorithm or The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon but much like the timbre of her voice she seemed to haunt me since that day.

Her sound, in my humble opinion, exists in a unique place. Elements of R&B, Soul, and Electronica are apparent but if you really want to nerd-out on genres you could add Trip-Hop, Cloud Rap and Future Soul to the mix too. Her Voice and lyrics along with the Production of Loa Gaze is like a soundtrack to a dream, consisting of elements of the past and the future existing concurrently in a purple haze as if you stumbled into a Jazz club on a lunar space station.

I might be waxing poetic, it's the the best way I can describe sound. Take the time to hear for yourself and paint your own picture. She released a new album Vol. 1 just last week and it's a fantastic work, so make sure you buy it on Bandcamp

Trip-Hop Matinee - Future Forest 2016 Set

Once a year deep in the woods, far away from the hustle of city life. Rests my favorite getaway, a place where I can truly escape the everyday drudgery of my daily grind. As I drive down the long bumpy dirt road that leads to this neon oasis, every thought of looming bills and impending sales targets drift away with every turn.

I've had the honer of playing Future Forest since 2013 and every year they level up in every single aspect,  not only the stages but to the music and live performances that are lucky enough to grace them.

This year they gave me a different set and at first it threw me off, typically I would play a "big room" peak hour ( give or take ) dance/mosh your face off kinda vibe. But this time around, due to the chillness of last season's Feels like Sunday, they had me on mid-afternoon at "The Nest" a stage found down a narrow wooded path past the main stage.

I took this opportunity to try something that was bouncing around my head over the last few months; to take my favourite Trip-Hop/Hip-Hop and Jungle Tracks of the 90's and early 2000's as well hunting down the original songs used in samples of some of those songs to piece together a mosaic of loops and samples using a combination of Abelton Live and Serato. Below is the end result!
